What are the main qualities required to become an IAS
Indian Administrative Service is one of the most prestigious positions that an individual wishes for. It is not a profession but rather a dream power. IAS gains one power, name, fame and respect that people desire for. In order to secure this position, one needs to be responsible and consistent in many things. It is considered to be an opportunity to serve one nation and devote oneself to the society and its people.
Being an IAS officer is taking up responsibilities on ones shoulder and abiding by the rules and regulations. One needs to have passion for public services and be flexible enough to do every work required by as a person.
“Public is not to be underestimated as fools”, as said by Abraham Lincoln. Always stick on to this and remember that this. Civil servants need to follow certain rules and norms. Ethics and integrity are the two basic agendas that one should stick on to. Abilities and skills that one has acquired during the course of the time should be put into use in every manner.
What are the main qualities required to become an IAS
1. Leadership:
Being an IAS officer is about working as a representative of the government. One should portary excellent leadership ability to be successful in government post. In order for the betterment and development of your country one needs to be bold and have the ability to give directions to the ones under you.
2. Administrative Ability
In order to full fill the administrative aspects of government, an IAS officer needs to be very skilled. In whatever the position or situation he/she is in, they need act accordingly. Administration hold the authority and power to give directions and make people come under one roof.
3. Ability to make decisions
Making a decision is not everyone’s cup of tea. Some times, especially during delicate situations, an IAS officer needs to act suddenly and make decisions. One has to consider all options available in order to take a decision. And while taking a decision one needs to know the adverse circumstances and consequences of the decision. Especially during emergency situations, it is really very important to know this. Because of this, an IAS officer needs to be passionate and excellent in his/her deeds.
4. Knowledgable
Being knowledgeable is not always about having conceptual knowledge. Rather it is about having practical knowledge. It becomes important for an IAS officer to know what, why, where, when and how things are happening. Having knowledge about the subject as well as connecting it to the surroundings makes the practical approach more convenient. It is also about solving administrative problems at all levels.
5. Being dedicated and Hard Working
In order to become and IAS officer one needs to work hard and prepare thoroughly. Keeping in mind that lakhs of students are writing IAS exams, motivate yourself. Hard work and dedication can be learned while preparing of IAS exams. Because, an IAS officer needs to be hard working and diligent.
6. Honesty
As we say, honesty is the best policy, so should be an IAS officer. IAS is all about having tremendous power and no one should misuse the divine power. Corruption being the biggest harm or problem to the society, an IAS officer needs to be honest. Honesty is not just towards others but to self also.
7. Patriotism
Getting a chance to serve ones country is the best gift or blessing that one can have. Using it properly and working for the country’s future benefit is very important. An IAS officer should have the spirit of oneness about our country. Being in the position,he/she should work towards the country’s goal.
8. Communication Skills
It is very important that an IAS officer needs to be an extrovert and a good communicator. He/she should express well to others in every situation. Either by speaking or writing, one should express themselves. In order to give directions during certain situations, having a good communicating ability is a must. During situations where talking to subordinates comes necessary, the higher officials should speak up.
9. Always think out of the box
Thinking out of the box is like seeing a situation from every side. To every problem there is three sides and because of this, one needs to analyse from all sides. Only when we analyse from all sides will we understand all the circumstances and it becomes easy to take decisions.
